Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind : Movie Poster, Website, Mobile Site
Student project to create a website and mobile site + to redesign a film poster for such an iconic film. Personally, the original film cover is almost perfect for the movie itself, thus I struggled to come up with something that could be even remotely on par. Up until this student project, I didn’t even realize that this film had a website, albeit it’s through focus films, I’d just never looked it up.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a romance/sci-fi that released in 2004. It’s about a couple who upon breaking up both undergo a procedure to have each other erased from their memories forever. Directed by Michel Gondry with an incredible cast including Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet, Elijah Wood, Mark Ruffalo, Kirsten Dunst, and Tom Wilkinson, the film explores the intricacy of relationships and the pain of loss. Charlie Kaufman who often times is associated with complex stories that deal with the human subconscious (Being John Malkovich) screenplays this visually arresting film.
This is one of my all-time favorite movies making the research portion of this project very interesting. I started by looking at the original movie posters from the time of its release, along with DVD covers, etc. There were really only 2 variations, though upon searching, found many iterations that other artists or fans had created. I also researched the beach house in Montauk that plays such an important role within the movie, trying to find the right picture to use. I wanted to add more nuance to the images I was using and searched for some photos from shooting.
For the website homepage, I decided on almost a collage of some of my favorite/important moments from the film with a background of a very important setting. I drew some inspiration for the poster from the original, keeping the names of the cast and adding the director and the focus films website link. I also decided to leave the poster with just the two primary characters, Joel and Clementine (Carrey and Winslet). Instead of using a picture of both of them together in the movie, I decided to collage them from two different scenes. For both the mobile and website, I decided to add a character/cast page, highlighting each cast member with a picture of their character as opposed to just character information. The mobile homepage is also drawn from both important moments within the film and photos posted by the cast/set team.
